[New post] Davros returns to plague Doctor Who

Davros returns to plague Doctor Who

What could be worse than the Daleks? Their twisted creator, of course!

Davros was introduced in the 1975 adventure Genesis of the Daleks, a brilliant but demented man with designs on conquering the universe by perverting an entire population into his vision of perfection. Played initially by the amazing Michael Wisher, the role was reprised by capable David Gooderson before Terry Malloy took up the mantle in a trilogy of adventures pitting him against the fifth, sixth and seventh incarnations of the Doctor. A gifted actor, Molloy gave the part a layer of sinister charisma and blood-curdling intensity. One need only look at his portrayal in Revelation of the Daleks, a televised story in which he eclipsed lead actor Colin Baker (no mean feat), for an example of his skill.

When Doctor Who wrapped up its time on screen in 1989 and entered what is now called 'the wilderness years,' Molloy returned to play Davros against his old foes and a new one, Doctor No. 8, Paul McGann. The Big Finish Audio dramas were lushly written and expertly performed, showing that the concept of Doctor Who still had life in it beyond the screen. The multi-part story I, Davros released in 2006 exposed the back-story and development of the character and was a triumph for Molloy and BF as well (it ranks among my personal favorite audios).

... And he's back!

THE RETURN OF DAVROS

Via Big Finish

After a break of six years, Terry Molloy will be returning to the role of Davros in a Big Finish audio drama in January 2012. The Curse of Davros by Jonathan Morris finds the Sixth Doctor and his new companion Flip (Lisa Greenwood) setting course for the Battle of Waterloo, and facing the combined might of the Daleks and their evil creator.

"I was delighted to hear that Davros was to return to the Big Finish fold in a new adventure with the Sixth Doctor," says Terry, "and I was thrilled to be asked once more to don the mantle of the Doctor's nemesis. The Curse of Davros is a an exciting return for the creator of the Daleks, and will deliver some unique surprises and thrills for the fans of Davros..."

The mini-season continues in February with The Fourth Wall by John Dorney, in which the travellers arrive on the planet Transmission. "The Fourth Wall is a cautionary tale about not getting too involved with our entertainment," says John, "and offers something of a baptism of fire for Flip as her tendency to not look before she leaps leads to her paying a heavy penalty. Saying anything more would spoil it... let's just add that you shouldn't get complacent when listening. The light tone is very much about leading you into a false sense of security. Make no mistake - something awful is about to happen.

"It's a story that's been in my head for ages and it's great to finally get a chance to get it out. I came up with the concept for the monsters about twenty years ago and have never quite let them go. And I'm delighted to be writing it for Colin, who I adored on TV and has always been my favourite BF Doctor, and the lovely Lisa, whose character is so fresh and vibrant and just plain fun to write for. "

The guest cast for this story includes Julian Wadham (The English Patient, Downton Abbey) as Augustus Scullop, while Yasmin Bannerman (Doctor Who: The End of the World) plays Dr Helen Shepherd.

March sees the release of Wirrn Isle by William Gallagher, which takes the TARDIS to the Nerva colonies on Earth, in a story set after The Ark in Space. 'The Wirrn had gone down so well with listeners in our Eighth Doctor story Wirrn Dawn that we were really keen to get them back," says executive producer Nicholas Briggs. "The trick was to find another strong story for them that wasn't just a reworking of The Ark in Space or Wirrn Dawn, and I think William Gallagher has come up with an entirely new story, with lots of very real characters with the kind of emotional concerns that we can all identify with."

Tim Bentinck (David Archer in The Archers) plays Roger Buchman, Jenny Funnell (As Time Goes By) is Veronica Buchman, while Dan Starkey (Doctor Who: A Good Man Goes to War) is Sheer Jawn.
