A mash-up of Star Wars and Doctor Who, Alternate Empire is the brainchild of actor Julian Bane. A fan of Doctor Who from childhood and a devotee to science fiction, Alternate Empire has been gaining plenty of positive word of mouth support from the fan community. A six part series co-starring Irish TC host Caroline Morahan as traveling companion Samantha, Doctor Who Alternate Empire is a labor of love written and directed by Julian Bane with his own money. A work in progress, it's interesting to see the production grow from part to part.

One of the more inspired decisions was to portray an entirely original take on the Doctor rather than imitating an existing incarnation of the Doctor. Bane's performance is very down-played and subtle, allowing for the performance to grow in its own way. In watching several other fan films, I have noticed that the Doctor in those programs was drawn in a similar pallet to an existing version of the character. It's inspiring that Bane braved his own take rather than go the safe route.

Alternate Empire is a mixed bag, and the seams certainly show, but you cannot deny the determination that the cast and crew have in their persistence.

As the series has continued, the production has become more elaborate as more crew members have joined the team. As the series gains steam, Julian Bane is taking some time to develop his universe more with a run of audio adventures set before the video program. It is clear that much has happened off-screen that will no doubt be expounded upon in these new productions.
