Tan Scallop Skirt from Oasis

Posted: 20 Sep 2011 11:20 AM PDT

Scallopskirt

When it comes to a truly sixties styled mini skirt, the key is in clever and stylish details. This Tan Scallop Skirt from Oasis captures a very mid-sixties feeling, with only a simple few design elements.

The high waistline and mini hemline are an instant hit for retro items, with the choice of a light tan colour tying into the vintage inspired aesthetic. The stand out design point, however, is the scalloped hemline in two tiers. The simple but effective structural choice is a cleverly moddish choice, instantly providing a 60s feel.

It's now available from Oasis for £40.

Kettlecorndress

For classic glamour that remains timeless, looking towards the forties and fifties for inspiration never fails. This Kettle Corn Dress by Emily and Finn captures the high class decadence of this retro era with ease, looking far more expensive than the true price tag.

The combination of a full circle skirt that kicks from the hip, along with an off the shoulder neckline creates the ideal balance of demure and daring shows of flesh. Finished in a bold red shade, this ideal for injecting some fun into your Autumn/Winter wardrobe.

Coming soon from ModCloth, the dress costs $109.99.

I4db6e89e838d5Add some minimalist Scandinvaian chic to your decor with one - or all - of these Egg Dot Vases from Danish designer Trine Weng.

The vases are made of porcelain and have that retro cylindrical shape whilst the egg dot repeat pattern in pale blue, lilac and turqouise has a definite fifties feel. Designed by Trine in her Copenhagen studio, the vases are diecast by hand in Portugal.

The small vase measures 11.5cm, the medium 17cm and the large 22.5cm. They are priced at £27.50, £30 and £40 respectively and available online from Berry Red.

eBay watch: 1950s Dansette Major portable record player

Dan1

I can't see it selling for its current price when the auction ends, but this 1950s Dansette Major portable record player is worth checking out, no matter what the final price, it you want to spin some vintage vinyl.

It's 50+ years old, but has been fully serviced, so the sound via that valve amplifier is likely to be as rich today as it was in the original era. Aside from that, there's also a two tone covering of green and grey, a cream front loudspeaker panel plus the original on/off volume and tone control knobs.

The four-speed BSR deck autochanger plays at speeds 16, 33, 45 and 78 manually and automatically, with up to eight records able to be stacked for automatic operation at any one time.

The turntable, motor and all mechanisms have all been fully serviced, oiled and adjusted for correct operation and any ageing parts have been replaced with new to ensure years of trouble free use .  It has also been fitted with a new plug and has a brand new stylus fitted.

If you fancy it, right now the price is 99 pence.

Add a new element of challenge to the tedious chore of doing the dishes with this Typographic Tongue Twister Tea Towel.

Another clever design from Retro To Go favourite Stuart Gardiner, this tea towel features 38 tongue twisters in five different colours printed on an unbleached cotton tea towel. Whilst you're washing up you can practice wrapping your tongue around all sorts of complicated phrases, all printed in a variety of typographic styles. There are some great sayings included: Can you imagine an imaginary menagerie manager imagining managing an imaginary menagerie?

You can buy the tea towel for £10 from Magma here.

Terry Posters - vintage film posters from Czech cinemas

We've featured plenty of retro prints and posters recently, but if cinema is your thing and you want something a bit more unusual, have a look at Terry Posters.

Based in Prague, the site specialises in film posters originating from Czechoslovakia between 1930 and 1989. Whilst their stock does include a huge selection from Czech cinema, this also includes the artwork for international films shown in Czechoslovakia too. The site claims to have 10,000 posters, so you'll need to set aside a good amount of time to look through the collection. You can browse by artist, director, actor, country or year of origin, genre or even by posters that feature guns, hearts or flowers. As they exist as an archive as well as shop, where they only have one of a print, it won't be for sale, but there is still a lot of good stuff that is. The poster above for The Knack and How to Get It sells for 163 Euros, but I did spot some for as little as 15 Euros.

Visit Terry Posters to see their full stock.

London Zoo Tea Towels

Zooteatowels
Bliss Homeware has put vintage London Transport poster designs to good use on a range of products, but I particularly like the London Zoo tea towels that use posters promoting trips to the zoo by public transport.

There are three designs: Off to the Zoo by Reginald Rigby (1915), Take Them to the Zoo by James Henry Dowd (1924) and For the Zoo by Rojan (1935). As we have come to expect from London Transport designs, the illustrations are great examples of design from their respective periods.

The tea towels cost just under £10 each from the London Transport Museum Shop.

Gatsby lamp from Graham and Green

Gatsby lamp

Graham and Green's Gatsby lamp seems slightly misnamed but nonetheless offers a striking bit of retro style.

Say Gatsby and you are immediately transported to F. Scott Fitzgerald's glamorous jazz era world. This lamp certainly has the glamour but looks to a slightly later decade, the 1940s, for its inspiration. The modernist style design features a dark circular shade atop of a gold stand, offering a striking alternative to other designs currently available on the high street.

The lamp costs £125.
