When investing a lot of money in outerwear, finding the balance between something that makes a statement, and something you can wear over again can be tricky. Opting for a classic and understated design, this Red Riding Hood Coat from Hearts & Hands pulls that balance off with ease.

The silhouette and cut of this coat really create the retro feel, with a swing skirt, hip pockets and single breasted button fastening. The addition of a hood adds both practicality and a stylish sixties feel, while the rich red fabric choice is effortlessly eye-catching.

Polka dots and tattoo print are always classic choices for 50s-look outfits, but finding something a little bit out of the ordinary is always a rare treat. That's what makes this Atomic Wiggle Dress from retro brand Miss Fortune stand out from the crowd of reproduction dresses.

The wiggle dress shape is done to perfection, creating a slinky hourglass shape with a great halter neck and collar combination at the neckline. The retro-futuristic space print has an instant vintage-look charm to it, available in a great range of colours suitable for any pin-up girl's wardrobe.

1980s Puma Bluebird trainers reissued in black suede

Posted: 03 Oct 2011 06:06 AM PDT

Puma

We featured these when they were reissued in Cardiff City colours a while back. But for the people who aren't fans of that colour/team, we now have the 1980s Puma Bluebird trainers in black suede.

Everything else is much the same as the 1982 original. So we're talking a lightweight running shoe with a black suede upper, white contrast detailing, leather lining, gold foil decal and a natural colour injection moulded PVC sole.

All of that for £65.

1970s Grande rug by Verner Panton

Posted: 03 Oct 2011 05:46 AM PDT

Panton_rug

Not just the man for cool seating and space age lighting, Verner Panton turned his creative hand to many other mediums, including textiles. This 1970s Grande rug by Verner Panton, which has just been reissued, is one such design.

A timeless and eye-catching piece, the rug uses the Grande textile, which was produced by Panton for Swiss textile firm Mira-X back in 1975, reproduced here in a mix of brown and sand. Not just a pretty face either, with real quality in construction too by VerPan, with the rug made of 100 per cent New Zealand pure wool.

The whole thing is a considerable 220cm in size, with an asking price of- wait for it - £1,245. Classic design rarely comes cheap I'm afraid.

eBay watch: 1970s Light Bulb Desk Lamp

Posted: 03 Oct 2011 05:38 AM PDT

Bulb

We have featured a couple of variations of this 'look' in the past - the original Bulb Table Lamp by Ingo Maurer and the rather stylish (and much cheaper) Watt table lamp at John Lewis. However, you can get a similar look even cheaper (potentially) with this 1970s Light Bulb Desk Lamp.

It's the same Maurer-like design, presumably a piece inspired by the original in the '70s (or possibly '80s) and presumably fairly affordable at the time. But time has been kind to it, with the Maurer lamp never more popular, so this 22cm-tall lamp in metal and glass could be a shrewd purchase.

Described as being in 'very good' condition, it's currently at just 64 pence.

Nintendo Donkey Kong

If you were a child, teenager or even parent in the Eighties, you will probably remember Nintendo's Donkey Kong. This pocket platform game is now available once more, thanks to a collaboration between Kiranbe Collectibles and Urban Outfitters.

In case you somehow missed it the first time round, in the game you are Mario on a mission to rescue the Princess at the top of some scaffolding. In order to reach her, you must jump over the barrels being thrown down by the angry gorilla that has taken her captive. It is a simple game, split over two screens, with graphics that don't compare to today's standards, but it is hugely addictive and I still remember the enormous sense of achievement I felt when I first completed the rescue.

It costs £130 (not sure how this compares with the original 1989 price) from Urban Outfitters.

The Sergeant Pepper Mill

Posted: 03 Oct 2011 03:22 AM PDT

Some things just seem so obvious that you wonder why nobody has done it before – such is the case with The Sergeant Pepper Mill.

The wooden mill has been decorated to look like one of The Beatles in their Sergeant Pepper finery. The mill can be used for salt, although the word play name and design only makes sense if you use for grinding pepper. You can choose fine or course ground by adjusting the knob at the top and the mill is refilled by removing the head.

It costs £18 from Heal's.

Update: We've just seen this on Lakeland too - and it's much cheaper at £12.99. You can find out more about it here.
