The Actionettes Present… Night of the Shimmying Dead in London

Posted: 18 Oct 2011 08:25 AM PDT

Actionettes

Ok, it's not quite on Halloween night, but Saturday 29th October is the nearest weekend date for The Actionettes Present… Night of the Shimmying Dead in London.

We're talking groovy ghouls, ghosts and go-go as London's original all-girl 60s dance troupe take over the Buffalo Bar for one night only. Not only will you see some tasty vintage dance moves, you'll get some great grooves and top notch live music too.

That includes all-female garage band The Nuns performing a tribute to legendary 60s band The Monks, along with indie/rockabilly from The Werewandas and Miss Ani from retro-pop band The Pipettes singing and spinning tunes. Talking of DJs, the Actionette DJs will be spinning foot-stomping soul, r'n'b, garage and rockabilly until the early hours, throwing in Evil Elvis comperes, a diabolical dance class and a hair-raising competition. Prize for the best dressed too, so make an effort.

The Buffalo Bar is at 259 Upper Street, London N1 1RU, with the night running from 7.30pm – 2am. Tickets £6 in advance, £8 on the door, £5 after 11pm. You can grab some here.

For sale: 1960s five-bedroomed Scan House in Radnor Cliff, Sandgate, Kent

Folk1

Tucked away just outside Folkestone, you'll find a real 1960s period piece. And what's more, Scan House in Radnor Cliff, Sandgate, Kent is on the market right now.

This is an architect-designed property, described as being a 'Scandinavian-style house' and dating back to 1964. Like some others we have featured of late, it's another out of the The Buildings of England book by Nikolaus Pevsner and Edward Hubbard, praised for a design that offers 180-degree views of the sea.

Folk2

The house itself is built with a steel frame, which is clad is clad in aluminium and timber, with a concrete tile hanging and a flat roof. The look of the place both inside and out is very much of the original era - this is the first time the house has been on the market in over 20 years. It really could be longer when you see the wood-clad ceilings and walks, room dividers and storage. Work needed, but a great canvas.

Folk3

In terms of layout, you'll find a reception room, utility room, workshop/store, shower room, sitting room/bedroom five and mezzanine on the ground floor. Upstairs there's a galleried landing, sitting room, kitchen, dining room, four more bedrooms and a bathroom. Outside, you'll find some paving and gardens, plus room to park your car underneath.

The house is on the market for £300,000.

eBay watch: 1972 Citroen DS 20 car

Posted: 18 Oct 2011 05:25 AM PDT

Cit1

Regular readers will know we're wild about the classic Citroen DS, but less keen on the prices being demanded these days for a used one. Not to worry, right now this 1972 Citroen DS 20 in cream is still hovering in the land of 'affordable'.

But there are a few things to consider before you get 'bid happy'. This is the 1967 variation of the DS, although the car was manufactured in 1972, with an upgraded engine from the original - a 1,900cc engine to be precise. Style thankfully intact, that long, streamlined shape guaranteed to turn heads, wherever you go.

So this downside? Well, if you are in the UK, it's worth noting that the car is a French import, so you're talking left-hand drive. That might be an issue if you're not used to that.

Cit2

But on the plus side, it is tax exempt, has a current MOT and is described as being in 'good condition for her age' with no corrosion or welding. The car has also had new suspension, water pump, coil, battery, handbrake pads and brake pads recently fitted plus lots more bills to show past work. It sounds ready to go.

Right now, the price at auction is £1,000 - cheaper than the other drivable models we've featured in the past.

The 1970's might not be your first port of call when sourcing vintage jewellery but this Fior Designer Heart Necklace has an undeniable charm.

In 1985 the V&A staged the world's first costume jewellery exhibition, which featured many pieces from the Fior collections. They've now got their hands on a number of Fior items dating from the 1940's through to the 80's. They are original unsold stock, never previously worn or sold and are in mint condition, so you can bag yourself an original piece of jewellery from this label which was a favourite of Grace Kelly's.

The necklace is 18CT gold plate and available exclusively online for £80 here.

Mr Perswall 1960s-style ballad mural

Posted: 18 Oct 2011 03:11 AM PDT

Ballads

Here's something for your walls that's a bit more interesting than your average floral wallpaper: the sixties psychedelic style of Mr Perswall's Ballad mural.

Inspired by the posters that were produced for the likes of the Fillmore during the period, the 2.65 metre high mural is decorated with suitably bright colours and far out text. If you like the style of this design, the Swedish company offers plenty more murals with a retro theme in their communications range. Take your pick from vinyl inspired artwork or boom boxes.

The mural costs £111.

Space invaders playing cards

Space invader cards

These Space Invaders playing cards offer an 8-bit 'update' on a centuries old pastime.

Inspired by games from the 1980s, Russian designers Alexei Lyapunov and Lena Erlikh produced this modified deck, with all the suits and symbols rendered in a pixellated style. Something to tear gamers away from their consoles then?

A deck of cards costs 10 Euros.

80192-Robots-Fabric-Wallsticker
I've lost track of all the retro robots that have graced these pages, but the products just keep coming with the latest being these Robot Fabric Wallstickers.

The set consists of four models of retro robot in green, red, orange and blue. What is particularly cute with these is that their parts are all separate so you can build up the robots anyway you want, mixing up colours.

They cost £35 from Rose and Grey.

Limited Edition 2012 Tea Towel by Maria Dahlgren

Posted: 18 Oct 2011 02:04 AM PDT

Product-957-1-olympics-tea-towel
As the London 2012 Olympics are still to come, they aren't something that would normally feature here, but Maria Dahlgren's Limited Edition 2012 Tea Towel is decidedly retro in its style if not its subject matter.

The design is typical of the work by the Swedish graphic designer (we've shown her city-inspired designs here before). It uses just two colours on the white tea towel background and yet manages to depict a lot. It shows the rowing, horse riding and sailing and cycling (the sports Britain is best at) along with the London Eye and flag. The design certainly a lot better designed than any of the official logos and merchandise for the Games.

It costs £12 by Cloudberry Living.
