Almost a year ago it was announced that the popular Cartoon Network animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars was being cancelled, and that a new animated series was being planned. The new series was later revealed as Star Wars Rebels, which will begin airing on Disney XD in the fall of this year (watch the teaser trailer here).

It seemed as if we had heard the last of The Clone Wars, but not so fast. Out of nowhere, it has been announced that a sixth and final season of the series is still on the way.

Season six of Star Wars: The Clone Wars will not air on Cartoon Network, however. Instead, the entire 13-episode final season will be released on Netflix on March 7th.

Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos had this to say about the announcement:

"Stars Wars is one of the most iconic franchises of all time and this series joins a long line of Disney content that Netflix members are and will continue to enjoy for years to come. The Clone Wars marks an important moment as Netflix welcomes more and more first-run content from The Walt Disney Company and its subsidiaries."
In addition to the new season, previous seasons of the show will also be added, as well as multiple director's cut episodes that have never been aired before.
