[New post] Marvel Secret Wars the video game

Marvel Secret Wars the video game

It's one of the most popular cross-overs in comic book history and the beginning of the 'event comics' concept that is still with us today. Various heroes and villains of the Marvel Universe were pitted against each other on Battle World by the bizarre being known as the Beyonder. The X-Men, Fantastic Four, Avengers and others faced off against Doctor Doom, Klaw, Kang the Conqueror, Doctor Octopus, the Molecule Man and more in a war of epic proportions.

A toy line was released that tied into the event and cross-over issues were released in monthly books. Spider-Man got a new costume and Ben Grimm left the FF to explore new worlds. Having revisited the book (available in various formats including a deluxe hardcover edition bearing the painted cover to the left), it works better as a concept than as an actual book. I won't risk ruining anyone's childhood memories, but for myself it seems to lose meaning beyond 'everyone fights everyone else.' In itself, that's not a bad thing but there are just so many wasted opportunities and it has to be said that while I love what Jim Shooter achieved as Editor-in-chief, his scriptwriting left something to be desired.

However, Marvel Secret Wars is a fantastic basis for a video game and word on the street is that may be just what is coming. According to Robot6, Marvel has trademarked Secret Wars for several possibilities including a video game. If this bears fruit, expect to hear collective howls of joy from grown men the world over. It may just be another version of Marvel Ultimate Alliance, but that's hardly a bad thing. Personally, I could play that game until my thumbs fell off.

The alternative to a Secret Wars video game is just too chilling to contemplate...
