Tribal Print Maxi Dress from Wallis

Posted: 15 Mar 2011 11:35 AM PDT

Tribalmaxi

British and American fashion has for decades been infatuated with colours and prints from faraway cultures, with the sixties and seventies fully embracing African influence in the mainstream. The rich colours and print of this Tribal Maxi Dress share that influence, retaining a retro appeal too.

The maxi cut is a great backdrop to create an early seventies style, tapping into the time that hippy looks went overground. The halter neckline of this creates the sharper cut, while a long flowing maxi skirt keeps the bohemian feel intact. With a black bodice ensuring the print doesn't overwhelm the dress, the vibrant tribal print can shine.

It's available now from Wallis for £60.

Sleeveless Floral Chiffon Top from New Look

Posted: 15 Mar 2011 11:16 AM PDT

Floralbowtop

Most of the sixties influenced looks on the high street focus on dresses and sharply cut mini skirts, but finding something to pair with those minis can be a challenge. This Flower Chiffon Bow Top from New Look offers a stylish solution that stands out among the many plain blouses and cardigans.

The sleeveless cut instantly injects some retro appeal into the silhouette, with a high neckline adding the right amount of conservative balance. It's the print that really makes this top though, with a modernist floral in a rich orange shade. Finished with a kitschy bow at the waist, the vintage inspiration is obvious but not overdone.

Get it from New Look now for £19.99.

eBay watch: Nissan Figaro retro-styled car

Posted: 15 Mar 2011 07:41 AM PDT

Figaro

Ok, this has come about because of a train of thought. Back in 2006, we did a piece on Nissan's retro car range, something I was reminded of when I spotted the bizarre Nissan S-Cargo on eBay. But this isn't flagging that vehicle up, it's flagging up the altogether more common, but equally eye-catching Nissan Figaro.

We're flagging up one example on eBay, but right now there are between 70 and 80 examples of the limited edition retro-styled sports car on eBay - so if you're reading this post a bit late, keep checking as they are always plentiful and in all the colours. Something to suit all budgets if you like.

Figaro2

The one we're pointing out dates from 1991 and is in a 'topaz' shade (one of 2,000 made in this colour), with a 1-litre turbo engine and on the receiving end of an overhaul by Fylde Imports, with pretty much everything dealt with, right down to getting a new roof. All the 'essential'  accessories are present and correct too. See the listing page for a full breakdown of all the work that's been done.

75,000 on the clock, with six months tax and 10 months MOT. Right now it's at £4,000. If that's a bit rich (or it's not your colour), there are, as we said earlier, plenty of others to choose from.

Merchant and Mills Notions artwork print

Posted: 15 Mar 2011 06:57 AM PDT

Postcards-2

A bit of a back story to explain this Notions artwork print: Merchant and Mills is a Drapers shop based in Hay on Wye. They sell all the dressmaking products you'd expect - from pins and scissors to thimbles and tape measures. They aim to source these from within the UK and are all sold and labelled with beautiful retro packaging. The packaging of these products, or 'notions', are what inspired this print.

Look closely at the print and you'll see the charm of the packaging: beautifully detailed illustrations of the objects coupled with great traditional typography, that make the objects themselves instantly covetable.

Surely the perfect print for anyone gifted with a needle, it costs £35.

Whilst the sentiment of this print might be something with which we could all agree on certain days, the words on the God Almighty Print are in fact a famous quotation from John Lennon, given during an interview with Rolling Stone magazine in 1970.

The God Almighty Print is available in a choice of colours, sizes and frames. A 90cm by 60cm print in a black frame costs £245 whilst a large 120cm by 80cm costs £300. £5 extra will get you the print in an oak frame.

Buy the print online from Words on Walls.
