That early '60s Mad Men-style look doesn't have to cost a fortune, you can get something inspired by the era from your local supermarket. At least, you can with this 1960s-style yellow shift dress by George at Asda.

Very much inspired by pre-swinging sixties (by that, we mean the early years of the decade), this bold yellow number is perfect for spring and summer day days and nights, with detailing including a seam detail to the empire line, short sleeves, concealed side zip fastening and with Elastane in the cloth for a bit of extra comfort.

Sizes are already limited online, so if you don't see yours, drop into your local large Asda store. £16 is the price.

Get into the 1970s spirit of the summer with this hippy hand-tooled leather bag.

This large vintage bag is practical and trendy and we love it. Its eye catching detail will keep you entertained and it's guaranteed to be an item of jealously among other fashion fans. It's made from strong and robust hide leather, with hand thonging and tooling and leather fringes.

The bag has one main compartment and is unlined. It's a vintage item but in good condition and only £43 from Suzie Floozie online.

eBay watch: 1971 Ford Capri 3.0 GTXLR MK1

Capri

Not sure I'm all that keen on later models, but the earlier Ford Capris are very stylish cars - like this 1971 Ford Capri 3.0 GTXLR MK1, which is on eBay right now.

It's a low-mileage mode, with just 59,000 on the clock from five owners since new, with period black vinyl roof, 'rally red' colour scheme and what's described as a 'reasonable' interior, with new carpets and door cards fitted.

A few bits and pieces still need sorting out (see listing for details), but it seems to run fine and has 12 months MOT. Tax-exempt, as you might have guessed. Still a bit of time left - £2,050 is the current price.

Reconditioned Wall Telephones

Wallphone
New in at Pedlars are these Reconditioned Wall Telephones.

They look like the classic 500 series phones in shape, but they are designed to be wall mounted, which makes them that little bit more unusual. The phone is available in either black or ivory and they have the old-fashioned rotary dial, rather the modern push buttons.

The telephone costs £235 from Pedlars.

Afternoon of Memories fine art photo print

Remember your childhood days at the funfair with this Afternoon of Memories fine art photo print.

The 8x10 inch print is on heavy duty Kodak Endura archival quality paper and each print is full bleed but can be printed with a small white border on request. The photo encapsulates the classic British summertime by the beach before families started to jet off abroad and the blanched affect of the image gives it a retro feel as if it's been fading away on the wall for the last thirty years.

Order your own from Etsy for $30 (£18.82) and £3.45 for postage.

There are only 250 of these cushions available and each is sold in a gift box with a Certificate of Authenticity.

For sale: Modernist-inspired five-bedroom house in Bolton, Lancashire

Bolton1

There's a common misconception that all northern towns are made up long terraced streets and social housing, all of which is available for the price of a large family car. As the likes of the Domus house in Burnley and the Farnley Hey house in Huddersfield show, interesting architecture does exist in the northern half of the UK. In fact, here's another interesting property - this modernist-inspired five-bedroom house in Bolton, Lancashire.

The agent's historical details are virtually non-existent, but we believe it was designed in the late 70s, possibly the early 80s, with influences probably from both modernist and midcentury architecture. It was certainly designed and constructed by the current owners and sits fairly high up overlooking one of the main roads into the town and set in an acre of landscaped grounds. The exterior has certainly been well-maintained and updated over the years, while the interior has been given more of a traditional look. Although most of that (except maybe the entrance hall) would be easy to take that out and throw in the 'period' interior look it deserves.

Bolton2

It's certainly a substantial property, a split-level detached house with five bedrooms (two with en-suite and dressing rooms), reception hall, a lounge with panoramic views, dining room, garden room, sitting room, games room, indoor swimming pool, fitted kitchen and family bathroom. Plenty of parking and a double-sized garage too.

Good luck selling a £1,250,000 house in Bolton, because that is indeed the price - and that's before you've ripped out the 'twee' too.

Jo Malone collector's edition David Hicks candles

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 05:30 AM PDT

Collectors-edition-david-hicks-candles
Luxury scented candles don't frequently feature on Retro To Go. However, this new range of collectors edition candles from Jo Malone are worth a mention because they feature some of the distinctive designs of David Hicks

Three different designs have been matched up to Jo Malone candles. The geometric pattern of Hick's Riviera is the perfect zingy match to the lime basil and mandarin scented candle, while the opulent Herbert's Carnation design has been paired up with the rich Pomegranate Noir scent. Finally, Hick's Hicksonian - made up of joined H's - decorates the red roses candle.

They certainly look good so let's hope the scent also helps justify the £38 price tag for each candle.

Knitting Vintage by Claire Montgomerie

Posted: 15 Apr 2011 05:27 AM PDT

Vintage knitting
If you were inspired by Marnie Fogg's book on Vintage Knitwear and want to be able to recreate some of the looks yourself, there's another book you might want to invest in: Knitting Vintage by Claire Montgomerie.

The book features 30 knitting projects relating to trends and knitwear looks dating from between the 1900s and 1980s and reinventing them to work as part of a contemporary wardrobe. There's plenty of visual inspiration too: as well as plenty of images, there's a look at how different classic knitwear styles have been reinterpreted over the decades.

With 176 pages, this seems like a bit of a bargain, especially as you can currently buy it for £9.79 from Amazon
