For sale: 1960s Edward Schoolheifer-designed property on Manygate Lane, Shepperton, Middlesex

Maybe land wasn't at such a premium 50 or so years back. Or perhaps house builders had different priorities. Whatever it was, this Edward Schoolheifer-designed house on the Manygate Lane Estate, Shepperton, Middlesex is very different to something found on a modern-day housing estate.

Schoolheifer designed this house back in 1964 for the Lyon group, one of a group of houses on the same estate that are now classed as a conservation area, all benefitting from a landscaped communal square away from the road, as well as front and back gardens. You wouldn't get a communal area like that in 2011, that's for sure.

The house for sale here has been 'sympathetically maintained', with much of the original 1960s interiors intact, including pine panelling, rosewood flooring, extensive glazing and aluminium window frames. But this is a modern home, with modern features too, so we're talking new kitchen, bathroom and boiler for example. Best of both worlds.

School3

In terms of accommodation, the house has an open-plan living area downstairs, arranged around a central 'pod' with a kitchen, cloakroom and staircase. Upstairs, the house has four bedrooms and a bathroom, with a garage found close by and additional off-street parked shared with the other residents.

A lovely piece of period design, you'll need to offer around £410,000 to get it.

Pussybow Midi Dress from ASOS

Posted: 11 Jul 2011 08:43 AM PDT

Pussybow

While full length dresses have been the most popular hemline of choice for high street designers this summer, the beginnings of this Autumn's designs offers something decidedly different. It's something equally appealing to retro lovers, however, like this Pussybow Midi Dress from ASOS.

With the midi hem length comes an instant feel of vintage conservatism, with this dress tapping into the forties tea dress style. The pussy bow and elaborate neckline add a sophisticated glamour to the dress, while the bodice has an elegant simplicity. In a rich burgundy chiffon this tea dress is anything but ordinary, providing a higher end forties look with ease.

Get yours from ASOS now for £40.

Deco Lady Earrings from Dorothy Perkins

Decolady

When looking back on twentieth century fashion history, there are few more iconic images than that of the 1920s flapper girl. While achieving the look can be difficult to carry off for most occasions, a nod to the style can be achieved with ease thanks to these Deco Lady Earrings from Dorothy Perkins.

The design features a flapper girl image, complete with the art deco references associated with the era, from the Louise Brooks-esque hairstyle to the fan detailing of her headpiece. In cream and gold, the luxuriousness of art deco design is captured in a fun yet delicate pair of studs.

They're now available from Dorothy Perkins for £8.50.

Otium Sofa by La Palma

Posted: 11 Jul 2011 07:38 AM PDT

Otium
I'll be the first to admit that the Otium Sofa by La Palma does not look the most cosy but what it lacks in obvious comfort, it makes up for with its sleek appearance.

Designed by Mario Ruiz, it is made from walnut on a stainless steel base. It has principally been designed for commercial use such as waiting rooms and reception areas, where you perhaps don't want people to get too comfortable. Two cushions designed for the sofa are available separately.

It costs £2,750 from Made in Design.

Summer of Love Duvet Cover

La Redoute is already promoting its Autumn Winter 2011 collection which includes this Summer of Love Duvet Cover.

Made from 100% cotton, the cover has a brown background printed with the words "peace" and "love" in retro typefaces, along with hearts, stars and CND signs. The catalogue website claims it is a tribute to the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco, but then gets things a bit wrong by mentioning the 1970s, by which time the Summer of Love had definitely ended. The duvet cover is available in three sizes (140cm, 200cm or 240cm) which are priced £27, £39 and £55 respectively. A matching flat sheet is also available.

eBay watch: Ettore Sottsass-designed Olivetti Valentine typewriter

Posted: 11 Jul 2011 07:11 AM PDT

Val

Always nice to see one of these on eBay. While the Olivetti Valentine typewriter by Ettore Sottsass isn't as useful as it once was, it is still a design icon - and in this case, still cheap.

Designed back in 1969 (and named after its day of launch - Valentine's Day), this lightweight period gem comes with its own matching carry case to protect the inner machine, although if you bought it, you'd probably want to have it shown off on a desk or table without the casing.

It's described as being in 'absolute working and cosmetic condition', as well as having 'no scratches, dings or cracks'. No reserve, so bid away, the current price is just 62 pence.

Classic Snoopy alarm clock

Posted: 11 Jul 2011 04:44 AM PDT

Snoopy

If cool and kitsch is more important to you than cutting-edge technology in the morning, you just might be the perfect customer for this Snoopy alarm clock.

Featuring the ever-popular Peanuts character (now over 50 years old would you believe) and his sidekick Woodstock having a snooze on the dog house, the clock is an old school bell-ringing clock, which has both a light and an alarm. Which is probably why it needs a battery rather than just being a wind-up clock.

Cheap enough, you can get one online for £13.50.

Case Study Houses from Taschen

Case-Study-Houses-The-Complete-CSH-Program2
Fans of our sister site WowHaus will be fighting each other to get their hands on this rather impressive coffee table book from Taschen.

Case Study Houses is an intensive retrospective of post-war home design in California. The project, which took place between 1945 and 1966, saw the design of 36 prototype homes, conceived by such luminaries as Charles and Ray Eames, Richard Neutra and Eero Saarinen, that have defined what we now think of as the mid-century modern home. The book is a mammoth tome, packed with photographs from then and now, as well as original documents, extensive floor plans and intricate sketches of each of these iconic buildings. A fascinating insight into one of the most exciting periods in modernist architecture.

Case Study Houses is £135 from Amazon. See the website for more details.

Architects
Looking for a lamp with retro style? How about this Architect's lamp from Bluesuntree?

In terms of the lamp's head, it's a very similar shape to one of Arne Jacobsen designs for Louis Poulsen, done in the early 60s. Couple that with the adjustable aluminium body and the weighted steel base and you've got a handsome design at a reasonable price.

How much? The lamp costs £125.

True Love Letterpress Print from Roll And Tumble Press

Posted: 11 Jul 2011 02:00 AM PDT

Truelove

As our regular readers know only too well, there are few things we love more than a bit of typography, especially when it's produced using a hand-cranked vintage letterpress.

This True Love Letterpress Print from Roll And Tumble Press uses the aforementioned technique. The Sailor Jerry-inspired tattoo font is carved into wood blocks and printed onto French cream archive paper with inks mixed by hand, meaning that prints have their own individual charm. A delightful vintage-inspired piece and a real labour of 'true love'.

The True Love print is $20 and available in 5 colours. See the Roll And Tumble Press Etsy store for more details.
