Seventiessandal

Amongst the current seventies trend sweeping the high street, it's accessories like bags and shoes that have really hit the mark for retro lovers. While some footwear designs are exaggerated and over the top, these Strappy Tan Sandals from Matalan are a truer interpretation of vintage seventies style.

The slight platform and chunky heel create an ideal base for the crossed straps and t-bar design of the uppers. In a rich brown shade of faux leather, this pair have the combination of colour palette and sturdy design that really speaks of the 1970s.

Princesscoat

Finding the perfect piece of clothing that manages to incorporate both practicality and killer style can be  near impossible task at times, especially without remortgaging your house to pay for it. This Velvet Trimmed Princess Coat by Sara Berman may not be the cheapest, but such a rare find could well be worth the extra spend.

The coat's classic princess cut taps into a British heritage feel, with velvet trim at the pockets and cuffs adding a timeless luxury. Some sixties-style modernity is added by the vivid red shade and unusually shaped hood addition, a feature that gives this coat an added element of practical design.

It's available in the UK from Urban Outfitters for £195.

eBay watch: Patrice Dupont-designed Philips 303 UFO portable record player with a low starting price

Ufo

I know this is something we have featured before, but I can't resist flagging up this Patrice Dupont-designed Philips 303 UFO portable record player, because the starting price is so low.

All too often, this icon of the 1970s space age era comes with a substantial 'Buy It Now' price, but this example can find its own price. As auctions always should. This UFO has the red cover and has apparently been checked by a 'specialist', with 'quite expensive, Germanium Transistors' replaced, so it's good to go for many more years. it also has a new battery compartment (works with battery or mains) and plays 'like a new one'.

A few minor usage marks, says the seller, but nothing more. Which is why it's worth talking about. Bidding stands at £1 right now.

Retro nature wall clock from Next

Posted: 25 Jul 2011 03:05 AM PDT

Nature wallclock
This new retro nature wall clock from Next does pretty much what it claims to in its name: marrying a retro look with a floral motif.

The design definitely looks to the starburst designs of the 1950s. However, the spokes of the stars have been replaced by the curved petals of a flower, pushing the feel of the clock into the sixties. Made from wood, the material enhances the retro feel of the design which could work in many different interiors.

The clock costs £30.

We shouldn't need to explain to you how important Dieter Rams is to consumer industrial design but here's a brief overview for the uninitiated. From the humble beginnings of his career at Braun AG in 1955, he lead the way in championing minimalism & innovation in consumer products. Original Rams' pieces are highly sought after by electronics geeks the world over and his 10 Principles of Good Design have influenced such luminaries as Jonathan Ive, designer of the iPod & iMac amongst other things.

This Dieter Rams print from Blue Ant Studio is a celebration of the undisputed master of consumer electronics design. The print features key, typically minimalist pieces designed by Rams during his illustrious 40 year career at Braun, including the famous SK-4 radio & record player.

Film Ending Bookends

My bookshelves are bulging with paperbacks, so I don't really need bookends, but if I did, then these Film Ending Bookends would be top of my shopping list.

There are three deisgns to chose from, each inspired by film endings. As well as the classic Warner Bros/Bugs Bunny "That's All Folks" shown here, there is "The End" in a red classic script or "Fin" in a simply font in turquoise, calling to mind French New Wave cinema. All of the bookends measure 13cm wide by 17cm high and cost £19.95.

Fancy a Retro To Go weekend to the Midland in Morecambe?

Posted: 25 Jul 2011 12:46 AM PDT

Midland

Ok, we did talk about doing a Retro To Go weekend, but never got round to sorting it out. Well, after some discussions and a reconnaissance mission to the town this weekend, we are considering a Retro To Go weekend event in Morecambe.

Aside from the (severely) faded glamour of the place itself (a great place for charity shopping, vintage clothing and vintage books), we're looking at trying to book the art deco Midland Hotel, recently renovated by Urban Splash and a stunning mix of the old and the new.

We have ideas to keep you busy all weekend, but before we start planning anything, we want to know if people would be interested. Feedback across any of our social networks, the site and 'old school' email. Just let us know and we can start looking at this seriously.

Check out the Midland at Morecambe
