[New post] The Incredible Hulk- SNES

The Incredible Hulk- SNES

After purchasing my Retro Duo, I have enjoyed a retro gaming lifestyle. This mainly involves playing old games that are nearly impossible to finish such as 1994's Incredible Hulk from U.S. Gold. The game incorporates much of the comic book's mythology ranging from Tyrannus to the Rhino and more. While the graphics are solid (for the 90's), the game-play is positively murder. As hard as I press the little cross bar and jab at the buttons, the green Goliath acts like he's been doped with Jim Beam instead of gamma radiation.

On his own, the Hulk is plagued by what appear to be robotic sentries who fire energy blasts at our hero until they are eventually blown to bits by his mighty fists. Small green pellets (gamma pills?) and twirling coins can be found in the sewers (I smell lawsuit, Luigi). Many of the sewers are littered with tight tunnels far too small for the Hulk, requiring the player to manually revert to puny Banner.

Unable to do anything but crouch and crawl, Banner can fire what seems to be a sawed-off shot gun... right. But the gun is only good for a couple of blasts before the scientist is overwhelmed and transforms back into the Hulk or simply dies.

If you lose all of your lives, you are treated to an end scene showing the villainous Leader gloating over a world finally under his control. It's a little touch that doesn't exactly make the fact that I died due to poor controls any easier to take, but it's neat that a narrative is at least hinted at.

A series of button combinations can allow the Hulk to plow straight through any opposition, smack his hands together to create a shock-wave or even crush his foes into tiny balls (shades of Ultimate Destruction?), but my experience consists of the the Hulk getting his green ass handed to him. Despite the game play issues, there is a generous portion of nostalgia to the Incredible Hulk that keeps me coming back. Maybe one day I'll manage to get past the Rhino (the first real end boss), but until then I'll just have to carefully study online game play vids like the ones below for tips.
